This week we welcomed new arrivals Warren Cariou, Julie Okot Bitek, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Millie Chen, and returning artists and curators Cecily Nicholson and Michelle Jacques, plus another wonderful guest, Jessie Short.
A full week of activities is outlined below:
Monday August 8
This is the final day to see Tannis Nielsen’s exhibition: A Creation at the FINA Gallery, open until 4 pm.
Tuesday August 9
Haruko Okano invites participation in a public performance. Collaborating with Peter Morin and Ayumi Goto in building a body contour, a returning of material she had been gifted over the course of the residency. The performance will take place at 2 pm at the north corner of parking lot R, near the upper cascades residence. She requests that participants take part non-verbally, with mindfulness to what others contribute.
At 6 p.m. there will be a poetry reading at studio 111 at the Rotary Arts Centre downtown, surrounded and in reflection of the in-transit collection art and ephemera of Ayumi Goto and Ashok Mathur. Entrance for this event is through the front door or loading dock. The space is also open to visit and inhabit at your leisure, and can be accessed by a key found in lock box outside the door.
Wednesday August 10
At 10 a.m. a presentation by students of Troy Twigg’s Indigenous Performance Praxis course will take place at the University Theatre.
At noon, the final panel will feature Annie Ross, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Millie Chen, Julie Okot Bitek and Warren Cariou in a semi-formal discussion, moving away from the conventions of artist talks towards a more open discussion of process and development in their respective practices.
At 7 p.m. Haruko Okano will host a wild dinner at the Platypus House, anyone is welcome to contribute locally sourced food at this event. Salmon from the earlier canning session will be provided that night as well.
Thursday August 11
A visit to the Sncəwips Heritage Museum will take place at 11 a.m. Anyone interested can meet at the Foyer of FCCS at 10:30, and message to confirm interest and whether able to drive or in need of a ride. Anyone driving independently can also meet at museum at 11:30.
An herb walk led by Haruko Okano will take place on UBCO campus, leaving from the FCCS foyer at 3 pm.
Jessie Fosty, a 4th year student at Brandon University will have a performance, time to be announced, stay tuned!
Friday August 12
A performative provocation by Ayumi Goto and Peter Morin will take place 1 pm by parking lot G, a space compelling us to think differently, share work and share ideas.
Sunday August 14
We will meet at 4 pm to travel to Bush Gallery for a screening of works by Tania Willard, Krista Arias, and a series of works curated by Tomas Jonsson in collaboration with M:ST Festival, as well as a final iteration of Decolonize my Heart, a performance by Peter Morin.
